Hall & Hall Engineers (HHE) was responsible for the site design, land survey and engineering of this new Kirkwood facility on the Oakdale campus. HHE’s role included the design of innovative stormwater treatment solutions, rain gardens & bio-retention cells, native landscaping, permeable pavers, alternative energy use, construction administration, topographic and boundary survey, construction staking and pre and post construction ALTA surveys.
The design reduces the project’s environmental impact and earned a LEED Gold rating. The campus parking lot was a critical aspect of the project. By utilizing permeable pavers, the parking lot resurfacing reduces stormwater run-off and the elimination of a conventional curb allows stormwater to flow into the bioretention cells in the parking lot islands. The bioretention cells filter and infiltrate the majority of rainwater runoff. HHE used native vegetation in the swales to aid in the absorption and cleansing of the rainwater. A hidden alternative energy solution is the use of a geothermal system, located under the parking lot to heat and cool the building.
