The Hidden Creek Apartments and Self-Storage is a 12.6-acre development consisting of 5 multi-story apartment buildings and 7 self-storage facilities along Boyson Road, just west of Bowman Square. Hall & Hall Engineers was responsible for site planning and concept development as well as final design and coordination during multiple phases of construction. At final buildout, the development offers 150 residential units and 192 storage units to the Cedar Rapids area and surrounding communities.
The design goals included developing an efficient layout of the apartment buildings that provided, space for a playground and shared greenspace, ample parking for residents, while promoting connectivity and accessibility throughout. In addition, it was critical to maintain a good balance of open space for residents all while preserving site security for the storage facility. Some challenges that arose during the design were routing of stormwater through the development and into a regional detention basin to the west, layout to ensure apartments are outside of the fall zone for a nearby cell tower and reducing the amount of retaining walls needed to address steep slopes around the perimeter of the site.
