Hall & Hall Engineers (HHE) completed master planning services, design, and construction administration for Fairfax’s City Park & Athletic Field Complex. The entire project site is approximately forty-five acres with phase one occupying roughly twenty-five acres. Phase one includes two baseball diamonds, two soccer fields, a concession building, rain gardens, a playground structure, parking, and walking trails.
In addition to HHE’s in-house landscape architecture, civil engineering, and surveying disciplines, HHE collaborated with architectural, mechanical, and electrical design professionals to complete this project. The concessions building contained restrooms, storage space, and a large shade structure. Ballfield lighting was also designed as part of the project.
The site topography offered challenges with being extremely flat, having a high-water table, and with limited drainage outfall. The grading and drainage design was a collaborative effort between our civil engineers and landscape architects. This helped ensure that the functionality of the sports fields and walking paths were not compromised when incorporating rain gardens and dual-use dry detention basins/warm-up areas as aesthetic elements of the park.
Phase two of this project involved the planning, design, and construction administration of a splash pad. HHE administered the RFP and selection process of a splash pad company, and collaborated with the selected company on the pad layout, spray features, and equipment best suited for the site. With a splash pad layout chosen, HHE then completed the design of all utilities, infrastructure, and other sitework necessary to accommodate the splash pad.
