Following a reduction in space due to The Eby Fieldhouse Renovations & Additions Project, Coe College asked Hall & Hall Engineers (HHE) to design a solution to increase their parking capacity.
HHE’s team of landscape architects, engineers, and designers tackled the issue and provided an innovative set of solutions involving the redevelopment and reconstruction of an open field and adjacent street, respectively. Services provided included topographic survey, site design, green design grant assistance, right-of-way vacating, and construction services.
The existing street, with parallel parking, had right-of-way vacated and was widened and redesigned to allow head-in parking. The open field was regraded, raised, and surfaced with permeable pavers. The pavers and an underground detention structure reduce runoff and off-site stormwater impacts by allowing stormwater to pass through and be stored. Native vegetation was also installed to reduce runoff and site maintenance, decreasing the client’s lifecycle cost. In the end, overall parking was increased on campus, despite parking losses due to the new Eby Fieldhouse construction.
